Banners, Pop Ups, Pop Unders, and Other Graphic Ads
Banner network advertising, pop up ads, pop under ads, and the many other graphical ad programs on the net can assist in getting your name (and site) out to the general public, and to targeted audiences. Click through ratios once were as high as 8% or more, several years ago, when banner ads were new to the web. Today they have declined to more standard ratios of 1% to 3%, more in line with traditional advertising.
At the same time, technology for increasing the effectiveness of ads, and for allowing people to remain on the site they were on when they saw the ad have now increased the cost, and the usefulness of banner ads. Previously, a banner ad campaign could take traffic from the originating site to the site of the advertiser. This was a down side for the site that hosted the ad. Today, many of the free banner networks still do this. But many companies have developed technologies that allow shopping to occur on a site from within a window that opens when the ad is clicked. Of course, this is a fee based service.
Banner banner in the sky, how I wonder...
What are some effective ways to handle banner ads? What are the associated costs of so called "free" networks? What makes for an effective banner? How do you know what your Click Through Ratio (CTR) means? Is it the ad that is poor, the target audience that is incorrect, or what?
