Linking to, and having Links from, other sites...
Links to and from your site, with other sites can be very helpful in driving traffic to your site... but be careful, you don't want to link to poor sites, or have links from mediocre sites... Many search engines track a sites' "link popularity" which is measured in varying ways by tracking the links that go to your site. Some rank the quality of the links, so that high quality sites that link to your site result in your site being considered to be of high quality itself.
Links to your site matter more than links from your site. After all, that is what Link Popularity is all about... Fortunately, many resource sites (such as this one) are willing to have links to other sites that have useful information, so that it becomes possible to share links among sites... Of course, many sites do not want to have links to other sites prominently displayed on their pages, for fear the visitor will leave the site... this is especially true of e-commerce sites, who will strive to keep a visitor on the site as long as they can, to increase the chances of a purchase. Regardless, even these sites benefit by mutual links.
Gaining mutual respect, and mutual links...
