E-Commerce Catalogs: Displaying and Selling Products

The online catalog has revolutionized retail and wholesale selling throughout the world. Catalogs for product vary extensively in complexity, configuration, degree of customization available, display options, wish lists, and many other parameters. Some have personalization tools available, some do not. Some can handle a wide variety of media types, others simple images and text.

The degree of sophistication also entails degrees of cost. Complex systems obviously cost more than relatively simple systems. A variety of vendors, such as PayPal and Yahoo Stores, offer ready made systems for uploading product information, that simplify the process, but also restrict certain functionalities.

With the variety and varying complexity of current e-commerce technologies, administering and selecting e-commerce tools can be a daunting task. catalog structure, provision for inventory management and display online, and integration with in house back office accounting and other systems should be evaluated, if needed.

A catalog for all seasons...

What are the considerations to be evaluated when selecting an e-commerce catalog system? What goes into administering an e-commerce catalog? Are you able to maintain the catalog system yourself? Can you add or remove product easily? Does the system address shipping charges, taxes, other add on fees? Does the catalog allow for product attributes such as weight, varying colors, multiple products within a single SKU? What mechanisms does the catalog provide for tracking inventory, if any? How is the software supported?
