With most websites, traffic to the site can mean many email contacts for the owner. These contacts can be farmed and used for promotion of the site, and of the products or services the company offers. Keeping track of how the contacts have or will be used is called Customer Relations Management.

Customer Relations Management has become a key aspect of website management, and there is little question that dealing with this online is a great tool for sales force automation and maintaining communications with an existing customer base.

There are however a great many considerations when dealing with this aspect of website management. The increased availability of software for the purpose has brought with it concerns as to proprietary systems, where changing from one system to another can be extremely costly for the company.
