Building and Using Forms...

Online forms are tools for collecting information, selling goods and services, and otherwise interacting with websites. Forms enable users to initiate actions on the server, either posting information or extracting it. Forms are the key to interaction on the internet. Aside from the obvious forms, such as contact forms and others, there are many forms that most of us don't really think of as forms. Search boxes are forms. Surveys are obviously forms. In fact, virtually everything on a website that you fill in or check off is a form of some sort. Indeed, many forms are hidden, and you don't even know they are there.

The use of forms for data collection, such as contact information or shipping and billing information is a no brainer... every one realizes the usefulness of that! But forms can be used for a large variety of interactions... customization of a website by a user to force the site to accommodate his /her preferences, surveys, navigation of a site, search tools, and much more.

Sample form fields (these don't do anything):

Text Field
Radio Button
Check Box
Drop Down Menu
Scrolling List
Browse to a File
Multi Line Text Field

Filling in the forms...

Forms go hand in hand with database systems... they comprise the communication system between the user and the database. How would you best design a form for data collection? How and why would someone be compelled to fill in a form? How can forms be used to structure a web experience? Are there good and bad forms? Are there good and bad uses for forms?

This area of the site contains articles, notes, and links to other resources that will help you answer these questions.
