Logical Linguistics...

Although a detailed discussion of programming languages is somewhat out of scope for this publication, a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages for use of them is not. There are a variety of languages available for website development... HTML of course is the standard mark up language for the web sites... Beyond that, there are several of special note that comprise tools for dealing with web specific tasks: Perl, JavaScript, PHP, ASP, ASPx, .Net, DHTML, JSP, JScript, Lingo, ActionScript, and others.

These scripting languages are used to build interactive systems, dynamic page deployment, and to talk to databases. Some are proprietary to certain companies (JScript, ASP, ASPx, and .Net to Microsoft, and ActionScript and Lingo to Macromedia, for example) while others are open source or public domain (PHP, JavaScript, DHTML, etc) In any event, the implementation of tasks and scripts to achieve certain functions is by no means standard, and unquestionably an issue that can affect compatibility across platforms and browsers.

Speaking in Tongues...

It is for the reasons of browser and cross platform compatibility that we address languages and the selection of them for use on the web in this publication. Why would you choose one language over another? What are the strengths and weaknesses of a specific language in terms of tasks? What is Open Source? Why would I want/not want to use an open source code base? What are the uses of DHTML? What are the disadvantages?

This area of the site contains articles, notes, and links to other resources that will help you answer these questions.
